Shingle Style Country Estate Rejuvenated

Shingle Style Country Estate Rejuvenated

This 100 Year Old Property had Endured Two Additions to the main structure over the course of the years that gave way to a very disjointed rhythm & flow to the exterior and interior alika

It was about to realize a renovation that would not only bring cohesiveness to the whole, but introduce the timeless quality & bold architecture of the Traditional Shingle Style Home.

I knew right away this was going to be a wonderful project. The homeowners immediately recognized the potential this home held on their first initial view of the 100 year old property. When they approached me with this project, I was immediately on board. Upon our contractor's & crews first site assessment, the design potential was not readily realized by all. I believe their suggestion was to "Dig a hole and bury it.", but I was ready with a full set of new design drawing, floor plans, design elevations & millwork proposals. The response was electrifying for both homeowner & contractors alike.

While maintaining the original structural envelope of the residence, with the exception of a 12' x 5'5" addition added to the main floor bath. The original structural elements where creatively incorporated into the new layout.

The home had three entryways, one for every addition it had undergone. With two active children & a sprawling countryside estate, the homeowner’s desire for one primary entrance that could accommodate all their needs took precedence. The new layout encompassed a 16'x16' Boot room, complete with custom cherry bead board shaker style closets cabinets, built-in laundry cabinets, utility sink & recyclable storage space. The addition of an expansive Palladian Window &open stairwell allows the light to flood the space & the ensuing kitchen from the western exposure. We sourced an elegantly forged iron & glass entry door unit to begin the dialogue.

The existing beams, varying ceiling heights & slopes in the kitchen added an extra challenge to the design. "With challenge comes reward." The beam was artfully incorporated into the cabinets, an expansive 6'x40'' casement window replaced original easterly oriented garden bow window, ushering in the morning light. A southerly existing dining room bow window was replaced with customized double French Doors & full floors to ceiling side windows.

The homeowners where transfixed by the ebb & flow of the main floor bath Emperador marble. He joyfully spent time laying out the natural stone in a natural aquatic pattern, enhanced with Italian glass tile.

The original stairwell underwent a refurbishing encompassing the addition of an oval window in the stairwell, library paneling, secrete storage spaces & an exquisitely crafted bookcase complete with faux Gothic Arched Transom.

A central receiving area between the kitchen & living room allows for a natural transition space for entertaining. Complete with wood burning firebox & cocktail service area.

Double French Doors, floors to ceiling windows, injects constant natural light into the new living room. Offers vistas of the outdoor natural settings from every vantage point in this room.

Prominent millwork & architectural motifs abound, the space is infused with a gracious, spacious environment.

In the upper level bath, a creamy hand brushed, chiseled edge limestone floor & custom shower imbues the space with an east coast flavor. A cherry custom cabinet complete with English rope moulding inset, incorporates a custom glass sink.

The Shingle Style home, typified by a multitude of varying rooflines will always remain one of my favourite styles. The A-Framed principal suite complete with tongue & grove ceiling panels, and walkout private covered deck was a welcome bonus to the project. Although the deck underwent new railings & restructuring, the A-Frame structure allowed the replacement of time worn patio doors with the installation of Double French Doors, side lites & segmented arched transom windows above. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall mirrored closet doors, complete with customized armoire, elevated and enhanced the architectural elements.

On the cloudiest day, this home feels bright & tranquil, a space that envelopes you for years to come.
